Towel specifications use a few terms that are easy to mix up. Here is what they mean, with common reference sizes buyers ask for.
GSM vs. weight per dozen
GSM (grams per square meter) describes fabric density regardless of size. Weight per dozen is the total weight of 12 towels, so it depends on both density and size. Hotel towels are usually specified in GSM or lb per dozen; bar mops and shop towels usually in oz or lb per dozen.
Common reference sizes
- Washcloth: about 12" x 12" to 13" x 13"
- Hand towel: about 16" x 27" to 16" x 30"
- Bath towel: about 24" x 50" to 27" x 54"
- Bar mop: about 16" x 19"
- Shop towel: about 13" x 13" to 15" x 15"
- Huck towel: about 15" x 25" to 16" x 26"
- Flour sack towel: about 27" x 27" to 30" x 30"
These are reference sizes only. Other sizes are subject to supplier quotation.
Choosing GSM for hotel towels
Lighter towels dry faster and cost less to launder; heavier towels feel more substantial. Match the weight to your guest positioning and laundry capacity.
